Zoom's native transcript requires a paid plan, cloud recording, and a toggle flipped before the meeting — and since May 18, 2026, Zoom captions can't be saved at all. Zoom's native transcription: who actually gets one

The May 2026 change: captions can no longer be saved
What changed, exactly
Starting May 18, 2026 (rolled out May 24–26), Zoom removed the ability to save or download closed captions. Captions remain viewable live with a 3-minute scroll-back window — then the meeting ends and the text is gone. Zoom's own support article says organizations that relied on saved captions must switch to Meeting Transcripts: a paid, cloud-recording feature.
Why it matters
Live captions were the last free native path to a transcript on Zoom. After the change, free Basic accounts have exactly zero ways to retain what was said through Zoom itself — no transcript, no caption export, no recovery. The transcript feature Zoom now points everyone at requires a Business-tier plan and a host who enables it.
The local answer
Local recording still works on every plan — including free. Zoom saves audio_only.m4a straight to your Documents folder with no transcript attached. The 4-step local workflow (free plan included)
1. Record locally
Click Record → "Record on this Computer". Basic (free) accounts can only record locally anyway — and that's fine, because the file is what matters. Zoom writes one folder per meeting under Documents\Zoom.
2. Grab the M4A
Skip the 500 MB MP4 — the audio_only.m4a file next to it is 5-10× smaller and contains everything a transcript needs. Same audio, a tenth of the wait.
